Synopsis:
Davies researched a special series of stories, for the Guardian, investigating the condition of state schools in Britain. This book contains the articles, together with short "sidebar" pieces. Davies was awarded Reporter of the Year 2000 for this research. The series attempted to go beneath the surface issues to expose the fundamentals - the undeclared policy to kill off comprehensive schools; the analysis of school failure used by Ofsted; the dishonesty about funding by the Secretary of State; the link between the success of private schools and the failure of state schools; underfunding; truancy; and some pointers to solutions, based on Dutch schools.
